Ellis

Ellis, 1 year old
I had the intention to breed with Pella and keep a puppy. For follow-up for the sports this was also a good timing. When the planning with Pella sadly couldn't be carried out, a logical step was to look for a new puppy. Again from working lines, so the choice was limited. Also my ideas about the bloodlines are specific, making the choice even narrower. In the end there was a litter planned in Switserland, which I liked very much. To my delight enough females were born and thus after some time Ellis came to The Netherlands.

Ellis is from a sportive family: her mother competes in the 3rd grade agility, a sister of her mother competes on high level in the Ob3 and the Spanish father of Ellis competes in the highest class French Ringsport (Ring 3). Between the Malinois this is quite an achievement!

Ellis is in character much harder than Pella. She is a bit hesitant to other dogs. She doesn't know how to react on dogs that express tension and then she attacks. To people she is very social, but she is very rough and with her big body she can easily cause bruses. An issue is her strong hunting drive that causes her to react very strongly on anything moving, in which she uses her teeth as well.

The plans with Ellis were not much different than with my other dogs: agility, obedience, IGP and all other things I run into. For instance I started canitrailing with Ellis. Ellis appeared to be a different type of dog than I was used to. She is much more independent and very difficult to motivate. She sure wants to work, but she has her own opinion and ideas. She loves tracking and the defence work of IGP, but the obedience is not her choice. She does it, but with a face that tells you very clearly what she thinks about it. She is very smart, learns very quickly and then gets bored and changes the excersize to her own ideas. The Obedience part of IGP works well if I don't do it too often. But FCI-Obedience will never be her cup of tea. In agility the same problem arose: technically she was very good, but she wasn't really enthousiastic and redirected her frustration to the environment. So I stopped.

Despite these issues Ellis obtained various certificates and even got her IGP3!

End 2020 Ellis gave birth to her first litter. She was a fantastic mother, who took all tasks very natural. The birth was very easy, Ellis performed all tasks fluently and with a calmness as if she had done that before. She had lots of milk and the 8 puppies had more than enough. I choose a sire for this litter that could compensate for her lack of trainability. Although the litter was an improvement on the mother on some aspects, the puppies appeared to be difficult dogs to handle. As I don't think I will have sports people interested for puppies all would go as pets, for which I find them too difficult. Therefore I decided not to breed Ellis again.
